Student Showcase : Orlando Gaffney-Hyde

This weeks Student Showcase is A-level Fine Art student Orlando Gaffney-Hyde.
1st year student Orlando is a fan of oil painting, collage and lino print all with a hint of the abstract about them. Taking his inspiration from the artwork of Winifred Nicholson and John Piper Orlandos current work is centred on cutting things out from view to leave an abstract work. This leaves his landscapes devoid of information and detail made of form, colours and shape.
Once he finishes here at Truro College he plans to go on to Falmouth to study a Foundation in Art where he plans to continue with his art and explore film making.
Orlando would like to thank the art department here at Truro College and give special thanks to Jo, Tristan, Louise and Bernadette for their continued help.

International Baccalaureate Exhibit

This week its the turn of the International Baccalaureate Visual Arts Exhibition featuring work by Channon Gray and Jessica Sealey.

This work represents the detailed investigations of ‘perfection’ and ‘memory’, two self-initiated projects that have been their focus since September 2013. Students are encouraged to identify a theme that fascinates and concerns them and by extensive investigation into visual arts, cultures, artists and makers they try and resolve visual ‘representations’ that communicate a universal message to satisfy their personal curiosity.

Student Showcase : Minnie Bunce

This is the first in our series of Student Showcase blog posts. The idea being we feature work from our talented students and a little bio on them and their work.

First up is Minnie Bunce of Newquay who is studying Graphics/Illustration and Fine Art at A-level. Prefering to work with hand drawn and digital media Minnie has produced these beautiful images to illustrate a childrens book. The book tells the story of two sisters, Pheobe & Rose, who are taught morals and how to get along by colourful visiting aliens.

Minnie has been inspired by the artists Sara Fanelli, Oliver Jeffers and the classic childrens artist Quentin Blake and this shows in her work. Following her time here at Truro College she hopes to go on to study a foundation in art & design at Falmouth University. She then wants to head off to Edinburgh to work, study and become widely known for her childrens illustrations.

Minnie would like to thank Pheobe and Rose for being her inspiration, and we here in the department say keep up the great work.

Fine Art A-level students were offered the opportunity to work in oil paint alongside local artist Carol O’Toole this week. Students were introduced to the basic principles of this diverse medium, working with limited palettes and exploring paint mixing. Students worked from still lives which they devised as a response to Masters works, producing amazing results by the end of day one.

It will be exciting to see what they achieve by the end of day 2! Well done everyone.

Thanks Again Carol, and watch this space for the next post.
