‘Drawing ON Reality’

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

AS fine Art students applied Leonardo da Vinci’s advice to their own drawings this week, when they traced direct from a still life they had been drawing!
DaVinci went outdoors and placed a sheet of glass across two easels and traced landscapes to study perspective. It wasn’t cheating; it was part of his lifelong search for science, truth and accuracy in his art. Here, he was studying perspective.
Students were then able to use this as an aid to assess whether they had seen and drawn correctly!
We are so Renaissance! (Except they didn’t have acetate or sharpies!) The examples show how well our students had done!

St. Ives Galleries Visit

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

This week the art & design dept took their yearly visit to St. Ives. The plan: be inspired!
With two packed double-deckers full of eager students we descended upon the sun kissed fishing village. Famous for it art and brilliant light we enjoyed a full day of gallery visits and taking in the sights of the town.
Students got to see more art in situ and do plenty of visual recording in their sketchbooks.
Highlights included the Tate and Barbara Hepworth sculpture garden, plus many numerous galleries to numerous to mention.
Art was viewed, drawing was done and pasties were consumed.
It was then time to head home, but delay in the form of `cows on the road` (only in Cornwall) lead to the only slow point of the day.
See you again next year St. Ives.

Beyond Truro College – Melissa Rolfe

The second in our series on past students who have gone on to work in the art & design industry

Melissa Rolfe – Freelance Prop Maker and Painter for Theatre, Events and T.V.
Studied at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (Theatre Design course)

It was back in 2010 that I moved on from Truro College. From start to finish the course encouraged me to push boundaries, experiment with materials and think outside the box. These are life long skills and I use them most days in my profession today. The staff at the college helped me to transform my dream of working in theatre to become a reality.

Penlee and Exchange Gallery Visit

Yesterday was the first of many days out and visits to see art in situ in the south west.
Second year students got the chance to visit the Penlee Gallery and the Exchange, both in Penzance. They got to explore the galleries and made drawings of the artwork they saw.
The Penlee Gallery is showing an exhibition on portrait painter Leonard Fuller, a key figure of the St. Ives school of art. Whilst the Exchange has artwork on display from Sandra Blow, a pioneer of the British post-war abstract movement, also with links to St. Ives.
The students had a great time viewing the exhibitions and will use ideas from their studies as starting points for their next project.

It`s that time of year again when we roll out the newspaper and masking tape. Yep it`s the start of another scholastic year here at the Art & Design department of Truro College, Cornwall.
The first year tutor groups have been getting to know us and one another today through our favourite challenge – build a newspaper tower that will support the weight of an egg. Sounds easy? Well with a bit of team work and masking tape the new students made it look so.
Welcome to another year at college everyone.
Now lets get arty!

Remeber to keep up with what we do here on our blog, or via Twitter and Facebook.
