TENTh – showcasing our talent!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Its that time of year again where we at Truro College Art & Design department take over Lemon Quay, Truro, for our annual show.
This is our tenth year, hence the name, and we grow from strength to strength each year. This, I think, is our best yet. From fine art to fashion, 3D desig to graphics, ceramics to photography, its all on show for all to see. There is such a wealth of talent here in Cornwall, and it is such a great way of showing it off to you the public. I hope it inspires and amazes in equal measure.
So, if you are in the area, PLEASE pop in to our big tent of art on the piazza, have a mooch around and enjoy the multitude of art on display!

Beyond Truro College – Chris Mutton

Our next college alumni that has gone on to bigger things is VFX whizz kid Chris Mutton –

“I’m currently working as a Rigging TD / Technical Artist in the VFX industry in London. The company is called Framestore, and after a brief stint in their commercials department I am now working in the world of feature films.  I have only been here a couple of months so far, so haven’t worked on any big blockbusters that I can boast about …yet!

My job is the bridge between the modelling and animation teams.  I take a 3D generated model and add the control systems and skeletons, as well as defining how the model deforms and anything else animation need to make a character move in a believable way.  It’s a great mix of artistic eye and technical knowledge.

Since University I have also worked in the games industry for Sony Computer Entertainment on the Killzone franchise, and for a company called Jellyfish Pictures on a children’s animated TV show called the Floogals.

At Truro College I studied Fine Art with Louise and Tristan, Graphic Illustration with Natalie, as well as Maths and Music Tech.  I also got involved with the regular Life Drawing classes on offer, which has been invaluable to my understanding of human form and function and something I kept up throughout education and still try and attend as often as possible.  I had an enjoyable year on Truro’s Art Foundation course before heading off to Bournemouth to study Computer Animation and Visualisation which is how I got into the career I have now.

Truro was a really great place for me to get a excellent grounding in Art.  The department was always such a fun place to be, full of energy and friendly faces!”

Beyond Truro College – Anika Manuel

Our next post college student success is Anika Manuel –

“My name is Anika Manuel and I currently live and work in Cornwall. At Truro College I studied the A level in Fine Art which was taught by Tristan Sherwood and Louise Walter, this gave me the opportunity to develop my interest in art and the basic skills I had. I particularly remember being taught how to use acrylic paint and this, along with my personal study and the knowledge gained from my History of Art A level, ultimately influenced my career as a portrait painter in the years following. At college I developed an interest in figurative painting, and then concreted this area of specialisation on the foundation diploma that I went on to study. I greatly enjoyed the level of experimentation on the course and encouragement provided from the tutors and it was on the recommendation from Gareth Edwards, my painting tutor, that I went on to apply and get accepted for a BA (Hons) Fine Art degree at Chelsea College of Art and Design in London. After graduating with a First, I came back to Cornwall as a self employed Fine artist with a gallery in London that exhibits my portraits internationally. My practice involves creating realistic depictions of the human figure (often celebrities) and this work is currently on show at The Moreton Gallery in the Cotswolds, as well as through Degreeart (http://www.degreeart.com/users/anika-manuel) All of my work can be viewed on my website www.anikamanuel.com or through my Facebook page: Anika Manuel Artist.

To all students currently studying the arts the best advice I could offer would be to persist, as long as you have a passion for art and you believe in what you are doing then you can make a successful career out of doing something that you love.”

Beyond Truro College – Matthew Tremaine

Next up is Matt Tremaine. He is currently in his third year studying at Bath School of Art and Design. Matt works in all areas of design but predominantly within publication/editorial design, typography, advertising and printmaking.

“My areas of interest are in fashion and sport. I am always testing myself and developing my skills in all areas of design. I see a challenge as an opportunity to show my abilities and I crave learning from others and gaining experience. Simplicity and minimalism in my work is key whether it be the design or the concept.

Whilst at Truro College I was taught the fundamentals of design, using software, analog processes and many more. I had a a lot of freedom and from experimentation I was able to generate a love and interest for all area’s of art and design. Originally I wanted to progress as a printmaker, mainly down to the passion of my lecturer George Hounsome, later on I found a love for typography but I still use all the skills and knowledge learnt years ago in my current practice.”

You can view more of his work HERE.
