Art & Design lecturers Joanna Lampard and Robin Dowell have recently been shortlisted for the first DARE Prize 2017, awarded by Opera North and University of Leeds. The prize “challenges artists and scientists to think differently about the creative process” by forging links between the disciplines during a year-long project. Hoping to develop a nascent project, which entertains the idea that emotions might be cultured in the laboratory, Joanna and Robin are intrigued by the impact of linguistic categorisation. Can we conceive of a time when this might be superseded by another analytical approach, and if so, could this transcend current systems to attain a Mendeleevian rigour? Their initial proposal is to explore these concepts, among others, in a book format, though they are keen that other options would remain open in the developmental stages.
