think inside the box!

The Access students were asked to think ‘inside the box’ this week as they explored the sight size approach to life drawing. The Sight Size technique involves taking measurements from life using your pencil as a measuring guide.
Students made a bounding box which was proportionally accurate and used this as a guide to inform further measurements and their drawing as a whole. Students took inspiration from the Artist Euan Uglow who is famous for his carefully plotted figurative studies. A tough session but the results speak for themselves! Go Access, some really smart, proportionally considered drawing!

Anthony Gormley inspires

A recent Access Art and Design life drawing session was inspired by the work of Anthony Gormley.
Students were encouraged to work in ink to quickly responding to a moving model who threw silk scarves and ribbons about in the air. The resulting drawings exploit the haphazard qualities of the medium whilst generating an amazing sense of movement! With some very atmospheric results, well done!

A bright start to the Year!

AS Fine Art students returned to College after the Christmas festivities, but they were far from gloomy!

Instead of a grey January they are enjoying a bright start to the new year as we embark on two weeks of colour theory! Students are mixing an array of colours. During the first week students played the Coca-Cola game, attempting to mix that ubiquitous red from memory! An exercise developed by the artist and teacher Josef Albers!

drawing with scissors

Drawing with Scissors, lessons from Matisse.

‘He said he was drawing with scissors, cutting directly into colour, abolishing the conflicts – between colour and line’

Access students channelled their inner Matisse in life drawing this week, with amazing results!

Students quickly drew with scissors working directly into coloured paper to create figures which have all the lively, direct and robust qualities found in Matisse’s beautiful cut out figures.

The students utilised rhythmic lines, forms which echo forms, sinuous arabesque curves, fluid shapes and negative spaces to imply and build structure.

“Cutting directly into color reminds me of a sculptor’s carving into stone.” (Henri Matisse)

Oil Workshop part 2

Last Saturday was the final session in the two day oil painting workshop led by local artist Carol O’Toole.

A- level students continued in the painting activities but were also introduced to ideas around glazing, introducing veils of semi transparent colour to their creative repertoire. It was exciting to see how far the students have come in such a short time and we can’t wait to see further paintings!

Our thanks again to Carol for her warmth, encouragement and expertise. An invaluable experience for all!

Look Drawing

Access Art and Design students have been thinking about the relationship between looking and drawing. Why do we look at the page when we draw? What happens to our drawing if we don’t look at it whilst we make it? How do we coordinate the journey of our ‘minds eye’ with our hand? The resulting drawings had a directness and honesty which was very compelling.
